    American Chemical Society Scholars Program

The American Chemical Society sponsors a national scholarship program to encourage minority students to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or other chemically related fields such as environmental science, materials science or toxicology. The goal of the scholarship program is to aid in building an awareness of the value and rewards associated with careers in the chemical sciences and to assist students in acquiring the skills and credentials needed for success in these areas by encouraging minority students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in chemistry. Non-renewable scholarship awards are for up to $2500 for freshman and sophomore years, and up to $5000 for junior and senior years.

    Eligibility:

Eligible undergraduate chemistry students must be African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, or Alaskan Native.

A candidate must be a US citizen or a permanent resident and be a high school senior, or college freshman, sophomore or junior intending to or already majoring in chemistry. A qualified applicant must be enrolled in the University as a full-time student. He or she must be a high academic achiever in chemistry or science.

Eligible candidates must demonstrate evidence of financial need according to PAPA form (Projected Annual Parent Aid).

Note: students planning careers in medicine are not eligible.

    Criteria for selection:

An American Chemical Society Selection Committee considers the academic record of candidates, evidence of leadership ability, participation in school and community activities and level of student interest in the chemical sciences as a career. The Selection Committee includes members from the minority groups that the scholarship program is designed to attract.

    Scholarship policies:

Candidates must complete an application form, the financial need document referred to as PAPA, and submit transcripts and required recommendations. The period for submitting applications to the American Chemical Society runs from November 1 to February 28. Announcement of award recipients usually occurs in early June. More information and application forms are available from the American Chemical Society.
