General Organic Chemistry II--CHEM 3312

This course is required for Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, and Dietetics majors, and will also be taken by students preparing for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and related health professions. These students will also take the associated laboratory, CHEM 3302.

Prerequisite: CHEM 3311
Students are strongly encouraged to enroll concurrently in the associated laboratory, CHEM 3302.

Course Description: Continuation of CHEM 3311; emphasis on more important functional derivatives of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and natural products important in biochemistry.
Three lecture hours per week; 3 credit hours.

Textbook and other materials:

  • Paula Y. Bruice, Organic Chemistry, 5th ed. (Chapters 14 - 27)

Course Objectives:
Students will learn principles of organic structure and properties and will recognize how the physical properties and reactivity of organic compounds are dependent on their structure. The student will be familiar with the systematic nomenclature of aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acid derivatives, and recognize structures of commonly encountered carbohydrates and amino-acids. The student will be able to predict the outcome of simple chemical reactions involving these compounds, and be able to apply these reactions to the preparation of simple organic compounds. The student will become familiar with the structure and biochemical roles of carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Course Outline: (The exact order of topics may vary by instructor.)

  • NMR spectroscopy and structure determination
  • Structure, properties, and reactions of aromatic compounds
  • Aldehydes and ketones; nucleophilic addition and aldol reactions
  • Carboxylic acids and their derivatives
  • b-Dicarbonyl compounds
  • Amines, amino-acids, and proteins
  • Carbohydrates and nucleic acids

Grades: A standardized final examination, comprehensive over both 3311 and 3312, will be administered in class at the assigned time. At least one test will be administered in class and graded before the last day to drop. Other tests, quizzes, and graded assignments, weighting, and grade ranges are at the discretion of the instructor, and will be detailed on a syllabus distributed on the first day of classes.

Policies:

  • Tardiness and unexcused absence from class are unprofessional behaviors which should be avoided, but attendance will not be graded.
  • Electronic devices such as cell phones and pagers should be turned off in the classroom.
  • Reasonable and appropriate accommodations will be made for students who present a memo from Student Disability Services.
