General Organic Chemistry Laboratory I--CHEM 3301

This course is required for Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, and Dietetics majors, and will also be taken by students preparing for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and related health professions. These students will also take General Organic Chemistry II, CHEM 3312, and the associated laboratory, CHEM 3302.

Co-requisite or Prerequisite: CHEM 3311

Prerequisite: CHEM 1121

Course Description: Emphasis on laboratory techniques as applied to synthesis and other reactions.
Three laboratory hours per week; 1 credit hour.

Textbook and other materials:

  • Operational Organic Chemistry, 3rd Ed by Lehman

Course Objectives:
Students will learn several operations for purifying organic compounds necessary for synthesis and understand the theory and consequences of the processes involved in each operation. Each student will learn basic safety and first aid information as well as standard methods of recording and reporting laboratory results.

Course Outline: (Current semester schedule)

  • Separation of mixtures
  • Thinlayer chromatography
  • Alcohols, alkyl halides, and nucleophilic substitution
  • Addition to alkenes
  • Fractional distillation
  • Oxidation

Grades: Grade depend on the students performance in lab as determined by lab reports and instructors and on a midterm and final exam. For complete information registered students may refer to current materials in eLearn: Lab Policies and Information

Policies:

  • Students must attend every lab section and adhere to laboratory safety practices .
