UM Chemistry/Research/NIH ARRA supplements

NIH ARRA Supplements will support research by the Parrill Group

The National Institutes of Health has awarded two supplements to a parent R01 award supporting research by the Parrill group on lysophosphatidic acid receptor structures, antagonist recognition, and antagonist identification. These supplements stem from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and total $313,622. The first supplement supports the summer participation of Dr. Debra Bautista, a local chemistry teacher (Christian Brothers High School), for the summers of 2009 and 2010. The second supplement supports a postdoctoral fellow until September 2010 to enhance the rate of discovery associated with the originally proposed work. These supplements bring the total NIH support for this project over five years to $2,126,000.

The lysophosphatidic acid receptors are emerging therapeutic targets expected to have impact on the treatment of cancer metastasis (spread from point of origin in the body), cardiovascular disease progression, and chronic pain.
