UM Chemistry/Ciba Foundation donates $250,000 to department

The Ciba Foundation advances science education through grants to the University of Memphis.

The Ciba Foundation Inc. has made a donation of $250,000 to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Memphis.

A one-time donation of $200,000 to the Department of Chemistry will fund The Ciba Foundation Scholars Fund in Chemistry. The funds will be awarded as annual stipends to attract, educate, and retain top-level graduate and undergraduate students in chemistry. The Foundation has also made a one-time donation of $50,000 to the Department of Chemistry to be used toward the purchase of equipment that will directly support chemistry research.

check presentation The unofficial announcement and presentation of the $250,000 check was made by Jim Morse, one of our former students (BS 90 and MS 93), to Dr. Peter Bridson, our department chair, Dr. Henry Kurtz, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Shirley Raines, President of The University of Memphis, at our 29th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference. By making the donations, the Ciba Foundation is fulfilling a three-fold mission: to develop the next generation of leaders who will lead the chemical and related industries in developing innovative solutions to address the world’s most pressing problems; to honor the proud heritage of Ciba scientists who over the years have made outstanding contributions to science; and to deliver tangible benefits to local communities by investing in their youth.

In April 2009, Ciba became part of BASF.

Please join us in thanking the Ciba Foundation and BASF for their generous gift.
