CHEM 1100: Preparation for General Chemistry

Audience:

This course is recommended for those students who will take General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1110) but who have not had high school chemistry recently, or need to review fundamental chemistry and math skills.
NOTE: This course does not satisfy any part of the science requirement for any degree, nor does it count toward the credit hour minimum for degrees in The College of Arts and Sciences.
Students with an ACT Math sub-score below 24 should also take College Algebra (MATH 1710).

Grades:

Five tests (70 points each) will be given during the semester.  Each test focuses on material introduced since the previous test but may require use of previously developed skills and knowledge. The final examination (150 points) will be given at the time assigned in the University schedule, and will cover the entire course. Graded tests (except the final exam) may be corrected and returned for extra credit.

Grades are expected to be in the range: A > 430 > B > 370 > C > 310 > D > 250 > F (out of 500).

Schedule (Spring semester, 2009):

  • Test 1: Wednesday, February 4
  • Test 2: Monday, February 23
  • Test 3: Wednesday, March 18
  • Note: Friday, March 20 is the last day to drop and receive a W grade
  • Test 4: Monday, April 6
  • Test 5: Friday, April 24
  • Final Examination: Friday, May 1, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Policies:

  • Make-up exams will be given in exceptional circumstances or for excused absences. Contact me as soon as possible if you miss a test.
  • Reading and problem assignments should be completed before the next class period.
    Homework problems will not be collected, but will form the basis for class discussion.
  • Tardiness and unexcused absence from class are unprofessional behaviors that must be avoided.
  • Reasonable and appropriate accommodations will be made for students who present a memo from Student Disability Services.
  • Academic misconduct and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.  Violations of University policy will be reported to the Office of Judicial and Ethical Programs.
