CHEM 1100: Preparation for General Chemistry

Spring 2009 (Syllabus)

Instructor: Peter K. Bridson (Office: SM 210; e-mail: pbridson@memphis.edu)

"Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose."  Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Homework Assignments:

The sections of the textbook that cover the material for each lecture are included in the list below, but note that the correspondence between the lectures and the textbook will not be perfect.  If you have time to read the material before the lecture, you are encouraged to do so, but you should certainly read the material after the lecture and supplement your lecture notes as you read.  The online study guides include specific details of what you are expected to be able to do by the end of the course.

Homework assignments are problems from the ends of each chapter.  Answers should be written out and brought to the next class period.  Note that assignments are the minimum number of problems that it is necessary to work to feel comfortable with proficiency.  You are encouraged to work as many more problems as you have time for.  As a rough guide, you may need to spend about three hours studying and working problems for every one hour in class.
